Iris Rozendaal final-97_edited.jpg

Iris Rozendaal works primarily with clay, creating sculptural forms that explore the relationship between the human body, emotional experience, and memory. Through an intuitive and deeply personal process, her work investigates how inner states can be translated into physical form. Rather than depicting the body directly, the sculptures reference bodily presence through abstracted shapes, surfaces, and tensions that suggest vulnerability, resilience, and transformation.

Traditional ceramic techniques form the foundation of Rozendaal’s practice, yet these methods are continuously pushed to their limits. A careful balance between control and surrender mirrors the emotional terrain her work seeks to explore. Each piece evolves organically, guided less by predetermined outcomes and more by intuition, and a responsive dialogue with the material.

Through her work, Rozendaal creates a dialogue between tradition and experimentation, connecting past practices with contemporary approaches. Her sculptures are both intensely personal and widely resonant, reflecting individual experience while engaging a broader human sensibility. In doing so, she continues to expand the possibilities of contemporary ceramics, shaping forms that are at once innovative, expressive, and enduring.
